This page provides a general overview of the kinds of art classes offered at the Port Aransas Art Center. Art classes for all ages are held year-round. “Drop-in” classes do not require advance registration. Prior to attending, give us a call to confirm the program is on schedule, and to inquire about other information that might be helpful. Fun With Acrylics
Mondays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Judith DeShong Hall teaches this beginner and intermediate level class. Students are asked to bring their acrylic supplies and something to paint on. The class will begin by reviewing design elements and principles pertinent to all art works. Bring
your supplies, ideas and if possible, examples or photos of your work. The cost for this three hour class is $18 for Members, and $20 for non-members.
Drop In and Draw

Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. The first Tuesday of the month is portrait drawing if that is something you would like to do, or something else, if you don’t!
Pat Donohue teaches this class, which will help you learn to draw or to improve your skills. Students should bring drawing supplies (supply list is available at the front desk). The cost to register for this three hour class is $18 for members and $20 for non-members.
Open Studio Time

Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Come join fellow artists and art students for Open Studio Time at the Port Aransas Art Center. Bring your favorite media and the supplies you need to work on your art, while enjoying fellowship and idea-sharing with fellow artists. The coffee pot will be “on,” and bring a snack if you wish.
Open Studio Time is free to Port Aransas Art Center Members, and a donation is appreciated from those who are not current Members. Come be inspired, and hopefully you will inspire someone else! We looking forward to seeing you there.
Drop In Collage Exploration
Thursdays on the dates listed below during 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Kelly Schaub is our teacher. In this class, students will explore hand-cut paper and mixed media collage using a variety of techniques and materials. Using a sketchbook and magazine images, we will explore scale, color, composition, thematic work, texture, layers, and abstract collage. The cost is $18 for Members, $20 for non-members.
Bring a small sketchbook (recommended – mixed media sketchbook, approximately 5.5 x 8.5 inches or 6 x 9 inches in size), scissors, a glue stick, and any magazines you have around. To learn about Kelly’s workshops for the Port Aransas Art Center in 2019, follow this link.

Nancy Buskey is the primary teacher of the watercolor class for beginning or intermediate students. Students will learn to paint or advance their painting skills. A supply list is available at the front desk. The Center has paints and brushes you can use to get started. The cost to register for this three hour class is $25.
Other Classes We Offer Occasionally
We also offer art classes on other topics. When we schedule them, we will post them on this website along with the cost to register.
An example of a jewelry making class is one where students learn to make a Coastal Necklace using Peruvian Opal, Amazonite, Turquoise, Cocobolo (Costa Rican Wood), pearls, crystal, sterling silver findings and a charm. The class normally lasts two hours.
Whine, Wine & Design
Paint in simple steps guided by a special guest artist! The Port Aransas Art Center provides all materials: a canvas, brushes, paint and wine glasses. “BYOB” and snacks, and we will provide the rest. This stress free, fun and creative event is usually held the third Sunday of each month, and it involves a $40 donation to the Port Aransas Art Center Building Fund. This class is held throughout the year. Please check the margin of this website for information and to register.
The following are just a few of the many outstanding workshops (i.e., art classes that involve more extensive instruction), that have been hosted by the Port Aransas Art Center. Creating a Travel Memory Workshop
This six hour class is taught by Judith DeShong Hall. Refer to your personal travel photos, memories and souvenirs to create your masterpiece! Students will create a montage, a composition of memories, which will make a terrific gift for yourself or a friend. Examples of the kinds of supplies used include:
- Medium of choice: watercolor, oil or acrylic, colored pencil, etc.
- Support for medium: watercolor paper, canvas, claybord, etc. (choose from smaller sizes such as 6×8, 8×10, 9×12, 11×14)
- Sketch paper and a ruler/straight edge
- Travel photos and perhaps a souvenir or two.
Easy Coil Baskets
Create wonderful baskets with the coiling method. Various twine and yarns allow for a great variety of looks, including non traditional shapes. A variety of materials create unique baskets. Coiling projects can be carried and worked on anywhere. This two-day workshop is held for two hours each day. Easy Coil Baskets is taught by Judith Deshong Hall.
Lee Ricks‘ Two-Day Watercolor Workshop
Improve your skills or learn to watercolor with this fun and informative instructor! The two day workshop runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. Each day, students will complete a watercolor painting to be proud of.
