This page provides a general overview of the kinds of art classes offered at the Port Aransas Art Center. Art classes for all ages are held year-round. “Drop-in” classes do not require advance registration.

Acrylics | Informative, Inspiring & Fun!

Mondays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. | Please refer to our drop in class page for schedule updates

Everyone is welcome to this class, regardless of painting level. Instructor Judith De Shong Hall will share various approaches to painting and design to encourage and support you and your personal creative expression. Basic design concepts will be covered as well as various applications and effects possible with acrylics, including design, mixed media and pushing individual creativity. It’s about creativity, so your personal style will be encouraged!

Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.| Please refer to our drop in class page for schedule updates

We welcome area artists to share our classroom space to work on art projects, get to know other artists and share ideas and inspiration. Bring your favorite medium and supplies. You may also bring lunch or a snack if you would like, the coffee pot will be on! (Open Studio time may be extended through 4 p.m. if nothing else is scheduled in the classroom.) Use of the classroom during Open Studio Time is free of charge.

Watercolor | Colorful & Creative!

Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. | Please refer to our drop in class page for schedule updates

Explore the magic of watercolor on drop in and paint Fridays with Jane Gillette. Hobby artists to experienced painters are welcome. You will have an opportunity to learn the basics of painting or problem solve difficulties you’ve encountered in paintings you are working on. Learn more about big wash painting, layering and glazing, composition, contrast and value in your work. Tackle problems with perspective, the figure, depth of field in landscapes or start with a simple approach to a painting you are more comfortable with. Come with an idea of what you would like to tackle to make the most of your time.

Lee Ricks | Winning Ways with Watercolor

Saturday & Sunday | November 9 and 10, 2019

Improve your skills or learn to watercolor with this fun and informative instructor! The two day workshop runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each day, students will complete a watercolor painting of which they can to be proud.

Michael Holter | Impressionism & Seascapes

December 2 through December 4, 2019

This workshop, hosted by the Art Center and the Watercolor Society of South Texas, will focus on the use of watercolor to paint exciting impressionistic paintings. Michael welcomes novice and advanced students and tailors the experience to individual needs. The Watercolor Society of South Texas will be accepting registrations for this workshop. Creating a Travel Memory Workshop

This six hour class is taught by Judith DeShong Hall. Refer to your personal travel photos, memories and souvenirs to create your masterpiece! Students will create a montage, a composition of memories, which will make a terrific gift for yourself or a friend. Examples of the kinds of supplies used include:

  • Medium of choice: watercolor, oil or acrylic, colored pencil, etc.
  • Support for medium: watercolor paper, canvas, claybord, etc. (choose from smaller sizes such as 6×8, 8×10, 9×12, 11×14)
  • Sketch paper and a ruler/straight edge
  • Travel photos and perhaps a souvenir or two.

Easy Coil Baskets

Create wonderful baskets with the coiling method. Various twine and yarns allow for a great variety of looks, including non traditional shapes. A variety of materials create unique baskets. Coiling projects can be carried and worked on anywhere. This two-day workshop is held for two hours each day. Easy Coil Baskets is taught by Judith Deshong Hall.
