Art Classes | Workshops

This page provides a general overview of the kinds of art classes offered at the Port Aransas Art Center. Art classes for all ages are held year-round. “Drop-in” classes do not require advance registration.

Prior to attending, however, please check our drop in class page and/or give us a call to confirm the program you are interested in attending is on schedule. Be watching the list of upcoming events in the margin of this website for updates.

Fun With Acrylics

Mondays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. | Please refer to our drop in class page for schedule updates

Judith DeShong Hall teaches this beginner and intermediate level class. Students are asked to bring their acrylic supplies and something to paint on. Students will explore the medium and learn elements of design and principles pertinent to all art works. Bring your supplies, ideas and if possible, examples or photos of your work. The cost for this three hour class is $20 for Members, and $25 for non-members.

Drop In and Draw

Laura Orchard teaches this class appropriate for all interest and ability levels. Students will learn about line, texture, shading, perspective and composition, and have some fun in the process! The cost to register for this three hour class is $20 for Members and $25 for non-members.

Open Studio | Hosted by Jim Johnson

Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.| Please refer to our drop in class page for schedule updates

We welcome area artists to share our classroom space to work on art projects, get to know other artists and share ideas and inspiration. Bring your favorite medium and supplies. You may also bring lunch or a snack if you would like, the coffee pot will be on! (Open Studio time may be extended through 4 p.m. if nothing else is scheduled in the classroom.) Use of the classroom during Open Studio Time is free of charge.

Watercolor

Nancy Buskey is the primary teacher of the watercolor class for beginning or intermediate students. Students will learn to paint or advance their painting skills. The Center has paints and brushes you can use to get started. The cost to register for this three hour class is $25 for Members, $30 for non-members.

Lee Ricks | Winning Ways with Watercolor

Saturday & Sunday | November 9 and 10, 2019

Improve your skills or learn to watercolor with this fun and informative instructor! The two day workshop runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each day, students will complete a watercolor painting of which they can to be proud.

Michael Holter | Impressionism & Seascapes

December 2 through December 4, 2019

This workshop, hosted by the Art Center and the Watercolor Society of South Texas, will focus on the use of watercolor to paint exciting impressionistic paintings. Michael welcomes novice and advanced students and tailors the experience to individual needs. The Watercolor Society of South Texas will be accepting registrations for this workshop. Creating a Travel Memory Workshop

This six hour class is taught by Judith DeShong Hall. Refer to your personal travel photos, memories and souvenirs to create your masterpiece! Students will create a montage, a composition of memories, which will make a terrific gift for yourself or a friend. Examples of the kinds of supplies used include:

  • Medium of choice: watercolor, oil or acrylic, colored pencil, etc.
  • Support for medium: watercolor paper, canvas, claybord, etc. (choose from smaller sizes such as 6×8, 8×10, 9×12, 11×14)
  • Sketch paper and a ruler/straight edge
  • Travel photos and perhaps a souvenir or two.

Easy Coil Baskets

Create wonderful baskets with the coiling method. Various twine and yarns allow for a great variety of looks, including non traditional shapes. A variety of materials create unique baskets. Coiling projects can be carried and worked on anywhere. This two-day workshop is held for two hours each day. Easy Coil Baskets is taught by Judith Deshong Hall.
